Busy season, busy dishwashers

In December and January, a Jeffreys Bay holiday home can go from a couple of people to a full house overnight. The dishwasher may run two or three times a day, loaded by guests who do not know the machine and are not going to read the manual. Braais, seafood, sticky pots and wine glasses all go in together. It is the time of year dishwashers are most likely to fail.

Common dishwasher faults in J-Bay

Blocked filters and pumps

Guests rarely clean the filter. Food scraps, bones from braai meat, shells, fruit pips and pieces of broken glass collect in the filter and get into the drain pump. The machine stops draining or shows an error.

Foam overflow

The classic holiday rental fault. A guest runs out of dishwasher tablets and uses ordinary dishwashing liquid instead. It produces huge amounts of foam, which pours out of the door onto the kitchen floor and can trigger the machine's leak protection.

What to do: Stop the machine, scoop out as much foam as possible, wipe the inside, add a small amount of cooking oil or vinegar to break down remaining suds and run a rinse cycle. Repeat if needed. If the machine shows a leak error afterwards, it may need the base drained and dried before it will run.

Leaks from worn door seals

Heavy use wears door seals. Leaks show as water on the floor in front of the machine.

Heating and drying faults

Elements and sensors wear out. Dishes come out wet or not properly clean.

Child lock and settings

Not a fault, but a common callout: a guest has activated the child lock or changed a setting, and the machine seems dead. Check your manual for how to release the child lock before calling us.

Guest-proofing your dishwasher

A few simple steps reduce callouts dramatically:

• Stock plenty of dishwasher tablets so guests do not run out.
• Hide or remove dishwashing liquid from near the dishwasher, or label it clearly as not for the machine.
• Leave a short instruction card on the inside of a nearby cupboard door: how to start a normal programme, to scrape plates first, and to call if it does not drain.
• Ask your cleaner to clean the filter and check spray arms between bookings.
• Book a check before the season, at the same time as aircon servicing.

Salt air and dishwashers

Dishwashers live inside the kitchen, so salt air is less of a problem than for aircons. But in beachfront homes, kitchens are often open to the sea air for much of the day. Over time, this can corrode the door hinges, the outside of stainless steel panels and electrical connections at the back. Keeping the area dry and wiping down stainless steel helps.
