Stoves that work hard

In Humansdorp and on the farms around it, the kitchen is often the heart of the home. Stoves cook three meals a day for big families and farm staff, bake bread and rusks, and handle preserves and large pots for hours. Freestanding stoves with four plates and a large oven are still common, and many have been in service for years.

That kind of heavy use wears out certain parts faster than in a home where the stove is used for an occasional meal.

The faults we see most

Plate elements

Solid plates and radiant elements wear out with daily use. Signs include a plate that takes longer to heat, does not heat evenly, has a crack or bulge, or does not heat at all.

Simmerstats

Each plate is controlled by a simmerstat, a switch that cycles the plate on and off to hold a temperature. When it fails, the plate may only work on high, not work at all, or the knob may turn without effect. With heavy daily use, simmerstats are one of our most common replacements.

Oven elements and thermostats

The bake element at the bottom and the grill element at the top burn out over time. Thermostats drift, so the oven runs too hot or too cold. If your bread or rusks have started burning on the bottom or not baking through, the thermostat or element is a likely cause.

Terminal blocks and connections

Where the supply cable connects to the stove, connections can loosen over years of heat cycles and vibration. A loose connection overheats and can burn the terminal block. Signs include a burning smell, intermittent power, the stove tripping or discoloured plastic at the back.

Tripping

If the stove trips the earth leakage, common causes are moisture in an element, a damaged element, a burned connection or a fault in the wiring. Switch it off at the isolator and have it tested.

Older homes and farm wiring

Many older Humansdorp homes and farm houses have original wiring, older isolators and long cable runs. A stove draws a high current, so any weakness in the circuit shows up as heat at connections. When we repair a stove, we check the connections at the stove and look for signs of heat damage at the isolator. If we find a problem with the household wiring, we will recommend a registered electrician for that part.

Power supply on farms

Farms on long supply lines, generators or solar and inverter systems can have unstable voltage. Electric stoves draw a lot of power, and most backup systems cannot run a stove, or can only run one plate. If your stove behaves erratically or trips when on backup power, it may simply be beyond what the system can supply. Gas hobs are a common backup on farms, but gas appliances should be installed by a registered gas practitioner.

Keeping your stove in good shape

• Clean spills before they burn on, especially around plate rims.
• Use flat-bottomed pots that match the plate size.
• Do not leave plates on high with nothing on them.
• Keep the oven door seal clean and intact.
• Do not line the oven floor with foil, which traps heat and can damage the element and enamel.
• Have a stove that smells of burning or trips the power checked straight away.
